Every project has its own challenges. In this case, the starting point was a rural tourism property in the province of Girona with no connection to the public water supply network and no access to the municipal sewer system.
Faced with this situation, the Envirotecnics team began with a first phase of study and technical consultancy to analyse the different available alternatives and define the most suitable solution from a technical, economic and environmental point of view.
The objective was to design a system capable of guaranteeing the water supply, properly managing wastewater and maximising the use of the water resources available on the property itself.
After analysing the different options, an integrated solution was defined based on the combination of different water sources according to their intended use. Drinking water will be supplied through groundwater abstraction from a well, followed by the corresponding potable water treatment. Rainwater, on the other hand, will be used to supply toilet cisterns, reducing drinking water consumption for uses where potable water is not required.
Wastewater management has also been designed according to sustainability and reuse criteria. For this purpose, a compact extended aeration wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 14 population equivalents (PE) has been sized, together with a tertiary treatment system that will allow the reclaimed water to be reused for drip irrigation on the property.
Once the solution had been defined and the equipment sized, the project moved on to the supply phase. The transport, unloading and positioning of the three tanks forming part of the treatment plant have already been completed, leaving them ready for the next stages of the project.
Over the coming months, the supply of the remaining equipment is expected to be completed, including the potable water treatment, reuse and control systems.
This will be followed by the installation, connection and commissioning of all the designed infrastructure, ensuring the correct operation and integration of each of the processes that form part of the property's water cycle.
Finally, Envirotecnics is also responsible for preparing all the documentation related to the authorisation for the use of rainwater and reclaimed water, as well as the discharge permit required by the competent authorities.
Integrated management of the entire water cycle
This project reflects Envirotecnics' way of working, supporting clients throughout every stage of development: from the initial study and solution design, through equipment sizing and supply, to installation, commissioning and the administrative regularisation of the facilities.
The result will be efficient and sustainable water management, particularly suitable for a rural environment of high landscape and environmental value such as the Vall de Llémena, where optimising water resources and respecting the surrounding environment are fundamental aspects.
