Ask for informationThe Petrobailer is a passive hydrophobic skimmer designed for the selective recovery of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL), including gasoline and kerosene, from wells and groundwater applications. Its passive operation requires no external power supply, providing a simple and reliable solution for hydrocarbon recovery in environmental remediation projects.
Constructed from PVC and PE, the Petrobailer floats until the hydrophobic filter comes into contact with the floating hydrocarbon layer. The device is suspended using a rope, allowing the filter to be positioned at the water/hydrocarbon interface to maximize hydrocarbon recovery while minimizing water intake. If groundwater levels change, the rope length can be easily adjusted.
The 12” hydrophobic filter can recover up to 1 liter of hydrocarbon, and the threaded components allow fast assembly and easy field maintenance.
The Petrobailer is widely used in groundwater monitoring, LNAPL recovery and environmental remediation applications, especially in remote or difficult-access locations.
The system is not suitable for heavy hydrocarbons or long-chain products such as diesel, heavy crude oil or degraded oils.

The installation of the Petrobailer skimmer is simple and is completed in just a few steps. First, measure and record the level of the phase and its thickness in the well. Tie a suspension rope of the required length to the ring at the top of the Petrobailer until it is centered in the well. Slowly lower the Petrobailer into the well. After a few minutes of immersion, the separation will be easily done. The hydrophobic membrane can be slightly submerged preventing water from entering the reservoir tube. However, it is recommended not to submerge it to avoid water penetration into the storage tank. Finally, remove the Petrobailer periodically from the well, unscrew the upper part and empty the contents into a suitable container. After each emptying, take back the measurement of the free phase to reinstall the skimmer.
