Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) is a high-purity metallic iron granular material used as a reducing agent in environmental remediation processes, especially for the decontamination of groundwater and soils. Its zero valent iron structure enables the reduction and transformation of chemical pollutants, such as heavy metals, chlorinated compounds and other organic and inorganic contaminants, through controlled redox reactions.

Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI) operates through redox reactions where iron in its zero state (Fe⁰) reduces chemical contaminants present in water or soil. During the process, the contaminants are transformed into less toxic or insoluble compounds, facilitating their removal or stabilization.

In in situ permeable reactors (PRBs), ZVI is placed as a granular medium through which contaminated water flows by gravity. Contaminants react with the iron and are neutralized while the iron itself slowly oxidizes to ferrous oxides and hydroxides, maintaining reduction capacity for years depending on the system's design and flow.
