The Waterloo Emitter is a simple, low-cost device for enabling the controlled and uniform release of oxygen or other bioremediators to promote and sustain the growth of microorganisms required for the bioremediation of contaminated groundwater.

This patented technology* allows the direct diffusion of oxygen into an aquifer through pressurized low-density polyethylene or silicone hose. The continuous and consistent release of oxygen to the hose creates the ideal concentration gradient in this passive system without creating oxygen bubbles.

The Emitters are ideal for bioremediation of BTEX and MTBE using oxygen. The diffusion process supplies molecular oxygen bioavailability to enhance aerobic biodegradation without the loss of corrective gas addition due to bubbling. The Waterloo Emitter can also promote abiotic reactions (adjustments in pH and hydrolysis, etc.)

The Waterloo Emitter is a simple, low-cost device to enable the controlled and uniform release of oxygen or other bioremediators to promote and sustain the growth of microorganisms required for the bioremediation of contaminated groundwater.

This patented technology* allows for the direct diffusion of oxygen into an aquifer through pressurized low-density polyethylene or silicone tubing. The continuous and consistent release of oxygen into the tubing creates the ideal concentration gradient in this passive system without creating oxygen bubbles.

The Emitters are ideal for the bioremediation of BTEX and MTBE using oxygen. The diffusion process provides the molecular oxygen bioavailability to enhance aerobic biodegradation without the loss of corrective gas addition due to bubbling. The Waterloo Emitter can also promote abiotic reactions (pH adjustments and hydrolysis, etc.).

Because a minimum water column above is not required, the Emitters are effective at any depth underwater. When used in combination with packers or water circulation pumps, the radius of influence is increased.

The unique diffusion technology of the Waterloo Emitter allows the use of almost any chemical product to treat contaminated water. The PVC frame allows the insertion of monitoring or sampling instrumentation to observe groundwater conditions during the remediation process.

  • Oxygen release for aerobic bioremediation of BTEX and MTBE
  • Hydrogen release for anaerobic reduction of solvent dechlorination
  • Introduction of dissolved SF6, argon, etc. as tracer agents (tracer tests)
  • CO2 release to adjust pH
  • Release of light alkanes to promote co-metabolic biodegradation of MTBE
  • Contaminant plume migration barrier, primary remediation device or refinement

The Waterloo Emitter consists of a silicone tube coiled around a PVC frame. When fluid is introduced into the tube, a concentration gradient is created between the inside of the tube and the groundwater.

The Emitter operates according to Fick's law, whereby diffusion will occur until there is chemical equilibrium inside and outside of the tube. With Emitter technology, oxygen (or another product) is continuously renewed, and as the groundwater flows around the Emitter, no equilibrium point is created within the hose, resulting in continuous diffusion into the groundwater.

When a gas is applied to the Emitter, there is a direct correlation between an increase in the applied pressure and the increase in the amount of gas that will diffuse into the groundwater; however, diffusion is the only mechanism that allows the product to be added to the groundwater.
